Dry Needling – Precise Technique for Treating Myofascial Tension
Dry Needling is a physiotherapeutic application in which very fine, sterile disposable needles are inserted into specific points in the muscles. These points – known as myofascial trigger points – are often associated with local or radiating tension. The method is based on anatomical and neurophysiological principles and is specifically integrated into physiotherapy treatment concepts.
Application procedure
During treatment, the needle is inserted into the affected muscle area in a controlled manner. Reactions such as brief muscle twitching or a local feeling of pressure are typical and normal responses from the muscles.
After application, sensations similar to muscle soreness may occur.
Typical symptoms for which dry needling is used
Dry needling is often used as a supplement to physiotherapy, especially for muscular tension associated with:
- Neck and shoulder tension
- Tension in the thoracic spine
- Muscular complaints in the lower back
- Muscular factors associated with disc problems
Head & Jaw
- Tension headaches
- Functional problems in the jaw joint (muscular component)
- Tension-related pressure in the head and neck area
Arms & Shoulders
- Muscular shoulder problems
- Overuse of the forearm muscles (e.g., in cases of tennis elbow or golfer's elbow)
- Tension in the upper and lower arm muscles
Legs & lower extremities
- Muscular tension in the hip and gluteal muscles
- Muscular discomfort in the knee area
- Overuse of the calf and thigh muscles
- Functional accompanying factors in Achilles tendon problems
- Tension in the sole of the foot (e.g., in the area of the plantar fascia)
Feet
- Muscular tension in the foot muscles
- Discomfort in the sole of the foot or toe muscles
- Functional changes due to incorrect or excessive strain
- Muscular factors accompanying problems with the arch of the foot
Hands
- Tension in the muscles of the hand and thumb
- Complaints caused by repetitive strain (e.g., during activities requiring fine motor skills)
- Functional accompanying factors in cases of overload of hand or thumb structures
Sports-related stress patterns
- Muscular irritation after intense physical activity
- Local fatigue in individual muscle groups
- Functional imbalances caused by overexertion or incorrect movements
The significance of dry needling in individual cases will be discussed together as part of the physiotherapy assessment.
Safety and qualifications
Dry needling is performed exclusively by appropriately trained therapists. Sterile disposable needles are used, and before the first session, patients receive comprehensive information about the procedure, possible reactions, and individual contraindications.
